Possible to move?[edit]

Hi, I'm here to see if it's possible to move a wiki from Wikia to here. I'm an administrator of Wikia's Elder Scrolls Fanon. Unfortunately, I've come to question whether Wikia is the best place for this wiki, so I came here as a result. Before I suggest this move to my colleagues, I would like to know whether YourWiki allows such moves.

If YourWiki does allow such moves, I would also like to know if YourWiki freely provides featured that Wikia already provides for free such as Semantic MediaWiki software, Semantic Forms, and Semantic Drilldown. It would be preferably if we are able to keep the Semantic MediaWiki features without charge, especially since other alternatives such as Referata provide them for free. If it does move, all the content would still have to be released under Creative Commons Attributions-Share Alike license.

Thanks in advance.

--Michaeldsuarez 20:17, June 23, 2009 (UTC)
Hi Michael! Yes, we can facilitate a move from Wikia and have done so in the past. Semantic MediaWiki was being tested a few months ago, though i'm not sure if they proved conclusive or not. It is likely that we will be able to accomodate the features and extensions you ask for, but I will check and get back to your shortly. Thanks for your interest in YourWiki, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards, BG7THAT'S NUMBERWANG!
Michael, Just confirmed and we will be able to support all of the features that you request, as well as the CC license. If you have any more questions, just ask. Regards, BG7THAT'S NUMBERWANG!
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, we do have one more question: Is there a limit to how much bandwidth and filespace a wiki here can take up? --Michaeldsuarez 23:10, June 23, 2009 (UTC)
There are no limits to disk space/bandwidth currently. FunPika 23:46, June 23, 2009 (UTC)
That's good to heard. I'll share share my plans with the others, and hopefully everyone will agree that this is the best place to go. --Michaeldsuarez 23:50, June 23, 2009 (UTC)
I just proposed this to the others. Whether we move this or not will be decided democratically. Any YourWiki user is free to leave comments, suggestions, or testimonials there. --Michaeldsuarez 16:10, June 24, 2009 (UTC)

wikEd[edit]

MediaWiki:Gadget-wikEd.js is out of date. The current version is located at RTENOTITLE. However, it is recommended that you replace the entire page with the following text, so that you don't have to update it every time it changes:

// install [[wikipedia:User:Cacycle/wikEd]] in-browser text editor
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
+ '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"></script>');

--Michaeldsuarez 23:36, June 23, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. --Michaeldsuarez 18:05, June 24, 2009 (UTC)

Mirroring our wiki[edit]

We would like you to mirror our automotive wiki here if you like. --94.246.126.149 17:33, June 24, 2009 (UTC)

Block[edit]

I hop no one minds that I blocked the user quickly. Over here, a user with a very similar name vandalized. Erwin Springer [talk] 01:06, June 27, 2009 (UTC)

I'm Back![edit]

Hey everyone, I couldn't go without leaving a note so here goes... As you may know I'm Mww113 and I was a former staffer here. My staff rights were removed due to conflict of interest with some of the old staffers. These people are now gone and I have worked things out with chuck. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them here. The purpose of this announcement is to inform everyone that I am once again an active helper. Thanks and glad to be back! I don't know you, but welcome back. :) Erwin Springer [talk] 14:40, July 2, 2009 (UTC)

Preparing to move[edit]

The users of Elder Scrolls Fanon have agreed to move here. We are now preparing for the move. However, I promised to wait three days before the wiki can be forked in case something turns up, so the new wiki shouldn't be created until Friday, July 10, 2009. I'll request an updated database dump from Wikia on Friday. If I misunderstood something about the moving process, or if there's something I should do now, please tell me. --Michaeldsuarez 18:40, July 7, 2009 (UTC)

Pictogram voting wait.svg In progress - I'll be taking care of the transition for the time being. Glacier Wolf 13:32, July 8, 2009 (UTC)
I would also be happy to help if their are any problems with the move, or if Glacier Wolf is for some reason unavailable :). Best, Mifter (talk) 01:29, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Well seems life we have an army of volunteers :P - I'll handle any technical aspects of the move :)   «l| Prom cat |l»  (meow?) 03:55, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Glacier, how recent is the database dump that you mentioned downloading at the Tesfanon Wikia? FunPika 17:20, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. As discussed in the Possible to move section, we've been promised certain extensions and features. These include:
  1. Semantic MediaWiki 1.4.2
  2. Semantic Forms 1.7.3
  3. Semantic Drilldown 0.5.8
  4. DPLforum 3.2
  5. Plus all of the extensions and features that basic wikis on YourWiki receive.
Before you create the wiki, please note that:
  1. The desired URL address for the new wiki is http://tesfanon.yourwiki.net/.
  2. The wiki's name should be Elder Scrolls Fanon.
  3. The license of the wiki's content should be CC-BY-SA 3.0.
  4. Founder rights should be given to User:Michaeldsuarez, User:Darth Storm, and User:George Skywalker.
If there's any problem, please contact me. Thanks. --Michaeldsuarez 17:27, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Can I assume that the inclusion of DPLforum on that list also means you want a Forum: namespace to be on the wiki? FunPika 17:31, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Yes, especially since we're already using the Forum namespace. --Michaeldsuarez 17:37, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
Okay. Another question I have is if you mind if we use the development versions of those extensions (currently we mainly use the development versions for extensions we run on YourWiki)? FunPika 17:41, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
No, I don't mind. Go ahead. --Michaeldsuarez 17:55, July 9, 2009 (UTC)
@FunPika - Last updated June 13, 2009. See [1]. Glacier Wolf 01:54, July 11, 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, That is kind of old, a lot can happen in a month, and from what I know Wikia updates their db dumps every friday, so would it be possible on this friday once the db dump was updated just to import the new dump so that the wikis users "don't miss a beat" so to speak when they resume editing at yourwiki :) ? Best, Mifter (talk) 21:19, July 11, 2009 (UTC)
Well it is probably best that tesfanon does not move until we can get a recent dump. Until then the wiki is created with the requested extensions/settings, but locked for now. FunPika 21:33, July 11, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help; we'll wait until there's an updated database dump. --Michaeldsuarez 15:41, July 13, 2009 (UTC)

I requested an updated database dump from Wikia, and they provided us with one. It can be found here. If there's any trouble with it, please tell me. Thanks. --Michaeldsuarez 18:19, July 16, 2009 (UTC)

Pictogram voting wait.svg In progress - Importing the dump now. FunPika 19:02, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
Template:Done Imported dump. FunPika 19:35, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. --Michaeldsuarez 19:47, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
The project namespace for this wiki on Wikia was The Elder Scrolls Fanon Wiki: but on YourWiki, it is Elder Scrolls Fanon:. This means that a lot of pages are in the wrong namespace. SUL 20:13, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
I'll fix all the broken links. I prefer the new name for the namespace since it's shorter. --Michaeldsuarez 20:16, July 16, 2009 (UTC)

GNU FDL 1.3 -> CC BY-SA 3.0[edit]

Per the discussion and poll held earlier this year where all YourWiki wikis were converted to GNU FDL 1.3 as a "stepping stone" to CC BY-SA 3.0, We have just converted the licensing of all Wikis currently on GNU FDL 1.3 to CC BY-SA 3.0. It was determined that re-licensing the content under a CC license was in the best interest of not only our users but also the free culture movement (this heightened by the Wikimedia Foundation's recent conversion to CC based licenses) If you have any questions about the change please ask any member of the staff or helper team. Cheers   «l| Prom cat |l»  (meow?) 11:56, July 15, 2009 (UTC)

Wikia and Wikimedia decided to switch because their users supported it. Why the sudden change? Glacier Wolf 15:16, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
Just so you all know, the deadline to switch is August 1, 2009 (see [2]). Do we still have enough time to vote? --Michaeldsuarez 17:36, July 16, 2009 (UTC)
The switch has occurred for several reasons, including that we held a poll at the start of the year where our most active users unanimously supported the change to GFDL 1.3 (Glacier wolf even said "Support the switch in hopes that we switch to Creative Commons sometime soon.") and it is safe to deduct that if anyone didn't want us to change to Creative Commons they would not have supported the switch to GFDL 1.3 (As for the migration provision was the only real change). The other reason this has been done now is as Michaeldsuarez pointed out, we were running out of time to do so and unfortunately the GFDL 1.3 vote ran for several months to get a complete picture. Given the unanimous support of GFDL 1.3, another vote to actually "walk the walk" to CC BY-SA 3.0 when we said at the time "The major change in GFDL 1.3 is that it would allow us (The YourWiki staff) to convert all wikis from GFDL 1.3 to the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License, at our discretion, if we ever wished to." and thus another vote would have been redundant and time consuming. Another prompter was that now Wikipedia and Wikia have settled into the change, it was within our best interest to follow suit so that content from those sites could be used easily and without confusion as to what license applies. Hope this addresses your questions   «l| Prom cat |l»  (meow?) 10:57, July 17, 2009 (UTC)

Elder Scrolls Wiki[edit]

Can I please be made an Administrator of the Elder Scrolls Wiki here? Please? I'd be really good at making a cool site. Jayden Matthews 15:59, July 15, 2009 (UTC)

You will have to ask elderscrolls_wiki's founder about that most likely. FunPika 18:51, July 15, 2009 (UTC)

Locked wikis[edit]

All, I have today locked the following wikis for inactivity:

If any of these wikis are "yours" or interest you, and you wish for them to be unlocked, please contact a Staff Member. Regards, BG7THAT'S NUMBERWANG!

Humorpédia[edit]

oi funpika você poderia me explicar essa his´toria de encerrar o humorpédia Blaze Heatnix 18:01, July 19, 2009 (UTC)

(English) Humorpédia has been marked for closure because we have reason to think it is being abused not only by its users but also by people of direct association with them. The final straw was when you (Blaze Heatnix) removed a block imposed by a YourWiki staff member for posting a personal attack on an IP talk page. All of these factors plus Humorpédia's purpose being unclear, have forced us to reconsider Humorpédia's place at YourWiki.
«l| Prom cat |l»  (meow?) 06:26, July 20, 2009 (UTC)

Captcha[edit]

Is it possible to remove the captcha function from the user creation account page and the IP edit page of my wiki (pegasus.yourwiki.net)? Users can not understand what it says. I would prefer a simple math operation, or a more simple captcha (like the one wikipedia has for external links).--Apollo 19:26, July 21, 2009 (UTC)

Apollo, I have copied your query to the Staff Noticeboard as Charlie is currently away from YourWiki duties for two weeks. Unfortunately I can't myself answer your question, but I have directed Promethean and FunPika towards this, who will hopefully be able to give you a better answer. Regards, BG7THAT'S NUMBERWANG!
The above has been copied from User talk:Charlie#Captcha. BG7THAT'S NUMBERWANG!
Captchas disabled for editing, but not for user creation and incorrect logins. This is due to our shared user table, and disabling those captchas on a specific wiki would make it easier for vandals to abuse the whole farm. FunPika 20:04, July 21, 2009 (UTC)
Ok, That should be enough. :)Thanks--Apollo 20:29, July 21, 2009 (UTC)

Header Tabs[edit]

Hi. I'm just wondering if any of the Staff could enable Extension:Header Tabs on Elder Scrolls Fanon. I was looking for ways to make YourWiki's Elder Scrolls Fanon wiki different from the Wikia one, and I believe that this extension would help us accomplish that. It would give us a better visual appeal and allow us to change our Manual of Style. I used this extension on some Referata wikis, so I'm familiar with it already. Thanks. --Michaeldsuarez 21:36, July 22, 2009 (UTC)

Bumping topic. --Michaeldsuarez 16:07, July 27, 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but due to 1 of our staffers resigning and another traveling, we have been fairly understaffed for the past few days. I will attempt to handle all current wiki requests in the next few hours if BG7 or Charlie don't come on. FunPika 20:53, August 10, 2009 (UTC)

How Do I Join The Staff?[edit]

I'd like to join the staff. How do i join the staff, anyway? —Preceding unsigned comment added by User:17morgm • (contribs) at 23:41, August 10, 2009 (UTC)

Missing / Unfunctional extensions[edit]

Due to the recent updates, an few extensions disappeared, or they ceased to work properly. The following list includes some of these extensions. Feel free to add more to the list if you wish. Hopefully, the staff members can fix these problems. Sorry if you can't fix some of these now due to recent trouble and missing personnel, but I think it's best to report these problems early. --Michaeldsuarez 14:54, August 11, 2009 (UTC)

For some reason yesterday no one had the right for registered-user protection (in between no protection and autoconfirmed). This is what caused the issue. FunPika 22:22, August 19, 2009 (UTC)

Extension Help[edit]

During the recent updates, Elder Scrolls Fanon lost some of its extensions. These extensions are Extension:SyntaxHighlight GeSHi and Extension:CreateBox. Can they please be re-enabled? --Michaeldsuarez 18:34, August 19, 2009 (UTC)

In addition, Special:AbuseFilter doesn't work any longer. Can you please fix that as well? --Michaeldsuarez 18:37, August 19, 2009 (UTC)
I updated AbuseFilter to a more recent revision to fix the problem with it. I will look into getting the other extensions online soon. FunPika 22:45, August 19, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Unfortunately, I have to add Entension:Semantic Forms to the list of extensions experiencing problems. Perhaps updating that to the latest version will help as well? --Michaeldsuarez 23:50, August 19, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for restoring Extension:CreateBox, but the problems with Entension:Semantic Forms still exist. --Michaeldsuarez 17:58, August 22, 2009 (UTC)

File upload and template problems[edit]

I've been having some problems with uploading files at the Fossil Wiki. Particularly, I tried to upload this image from Wikia [3], but the file upload page gives me the following in big red font: This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. This happens when I try to upload other images as well. Can anyone figure this out?

Another problem is with a template that was also imported from Wikia. Anytime the Taxobox template is transcluded to a page, the page goes blank. Is there a problem with the template, and is there anyway to fix it? I hope this is the right place to ask such questions, and thanks for your help in advance! --Meghunter99 16:05, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Activity[edit]

I see the last wiki creation activity was about 11 August and on IRC chuck a week or so ago suggested it would be a few more days more. I'm wondering if anyone has an update on status? I currently have time available to get the proposed OpenFOAM wiki off the ground... Hoogs 05:21, September 16, 2009 (UTC)

As far as I know, we are still in the process of fixing up our wiki request system. For the time being, no wikis are being created at this time. However, you are more than welcome to start a Mini Wiki if you are anxious to get started! Glacier Wolf 02:17, September 18, 2009 (UTC)
